Living in the wilderness

The new world that people dreamed of was in thick sea of ​​trees. Pioneers mowed bamboo grass, built huts and spent the night. Migrants made every effort for building future hometown through cultivation in summer and labor in forest in winter. They overcame fear of nature, anxiety about illness and disasters and nostalgia by delight of harvesting. Festival at the shrine dedicated to the guardian deity of Teshio was a place to comfort the spirits of those who could not achieve the cultivation and pray for a better harvest.

原野のくらし

　人々が夢にまでみた新天地は、うっそうとした樹海の中にあった。開拓者は笹を刈り、掘立小屋をつくり、夜を過ごした。移住者は、夏は開墾、冬は山稼ぎにと、明日の郷土づくりに血と汗を流し続けた。自然へのおそれ、病気や災害の不安、たちがたい郷愁を、収穫の喜びによって乗り越えた。天塩の守り神を祀った神社での祭りは、開拓を成し遂げられなかった人たちの霊を慰め、さらなる豊穣を祈る場でもあった。
