Living in the river and the sea

The Teshio River was driving force for establishing many people, goods, and culture in the land of Teshio. Timber was assembled into raft and carried by utilizing flow of the Teshio River from mountain, and then transported to the mainland and Otaru by loading ships waiting off the coast of Teshio Port. From Otaru, many daily necessities were carried to Teshio Port through sea route and sent to various places inland through the Teshio River. Fishing industry for herring and salmon that approached shore was also thriving. Teshio prospered as the most advanced city after Otaru, supported by the prosperity of timber and fisheries until around 1935 land transportation were developed and railways were opened.

川と海のくらし

　天塩川は多くの人や物資・文化を天塩の地に定着させる原動力であった。造材山の木材は、筏に組んで天塩川を流送され、天塩港の沖で待つ積取船によって本州や小樽に運ばれた。小樽からは多くの日用雑貨が海路天塩港に運ばれ、天塩川を通じて内陸の各地に送られた。岸に寄り付くニシンや鮭を目的とした漁業も盛んであった。天塩は、陸運の発達や鉄道が開通する昭和10年頃まで、木材と漁業の繁栄に支えられ、小樽に次ぐ最先端の街として栄えた。
